The low-pressure nature of collage-making is such a relaxing and enjoyable way to create art, making it a perfect mindful activity for unwinding and finding joy in the creative process without the need for precision or it to look a specific way. It’s an amazing technique to turn to when you feel creatively blocked or uninspired, or if you find drawing intimidating.

You’ll learn to work with various materials and techniques in this course, expanding your repertoire of creative skills which you can draw on in future creative projects, gaining practical skills and a deeper understanding of color, mark-making, and the art of collage.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

    EXPLORING FOLK ART

    You will gather inspiration by analysing the visual characteristics which are commonly seen in folk art and why they suit collage so beautifully.

    You will use this research to determine a few key characteristics to incorporate into your folk-inspired botanical designs.

    DESIGNING

    You will generate a variety of rough sketches to create a series of folk-inspired botanical designs, using the features you identified from your research and inspiration.

    You will work from these designs later when you come to cut out shapes from your collage papers.

    EXPLORING MARK MAKING

    You will use a range of mark making techniques to add depth and interest to your collage papers.

    This can be achieved using whatever art materials you have to hand and feel comfy using, and can be as effective with a monochromatic palette of a simple black pen on white paper, to a range of colored papers and materials to create a more vibrant palette.

    DRAWING WITH SCISSORS

    Working from your botanical designs, you will explore how to approach drawing with scissors to work directly with the paper without using drawn outlines.

    You will cut out shapes to layer and collage, playfully bringing your botanical designs to life.

    Assembling

    You will assemble your paper shapes to form your folk-inspired botanical collage, whilst playfully experimenting with the placement of the shapes to explore the impact small changes in positioning of elements can have.

    FINISHING TOUCHES

    I’ll show you how to add some finishing touches to refine what you have created, and make your collages sing!

    I’ll give you some ideas for how you could continue to develop the practice beyond the class, so that you can incorporate what you have learnt into an ongoing creative practice.

SUITABLE FOR ALL LEVELS

If you are a beginner, I provide some helpful composition references and sketching guides in the class resource PDF, so if you’re new to art-making they will help you out!

If you are more of an advanced artist, I think you will also have a lot of fun and find this approach really playful and freeing! You can adapt the collage to your own style and preferred materials, whilst picking up a ton of ideas around this approach to making images.

I’m an artist and educator, and my mission is to support and empower others to explore their creativity and find more joy within the process of making art.

Collage has allowed me to loosen up, let go of perfection, and has been the thing that has saved me from periods of creative block. It's the thing I always reach for when I'm feeling uninspired or overwhelmed because it's such a low pressure way to create art.

There is a playfulness and freedom to working with collage, which allows us to explore ideas without the fear and permanence which can come from working directly onto the page.

  • No, the class is designed for all levels, from complete beginner to more advanced artists.

  • All my courses consist of pre recorded video lessons. There are also downloadable resources such as worksheets, reference photos, templates, guides and other materials which will help support your learning.

    All my courses are structured around a class project, which is a practical way of applying the skills taught in the course, and also means that you will have created something by the end of the course, as well as learning lots of new skills - I think this is the best way of learning!

  • You will have lifetime access which means you will have access for as long as the course exists on the internet.

  • Yes you can - when you select the one-time purchase, there is an option at checkout to buy the course as a gift.
